The Swamp Cabbage Festival is proud to announce Myra Johnson as the 2025 Grand Marshal, recognizing her lifelong dedication to service, her deep-rooted commitment to LaBelle, and her unwavering advocacy for veterans.

A proud Navy veteran, Myra has made it her mission to ensure that those who served our country are honored and supported. As the Commander of the American Legion, she works tirelessly to assist local veterans, providing them with resources, recognition, and a strong sense of community. One of her most cherished projects is the annual Christmas Wreath program, which honors fallen heroes by placing wreaths on veterans' graves in local cemeteries. Her dedication doesn’t stop there—she is a constant presence at veteran funerals, participating in gun salutes to pay tribute to those who served.

Beyond her military advocacy, Myra has been instrumental in shaping the Swamp Cabbage Festival’s cherished traditions. For over 15 years, she has played a pivotal role as a director of the Swamp Cabbage Queen Pageant, mentoring young women and instilling in them a deep appreciation for their community and its heritage. She has also represented LaBelle on the national stage in the Ms. Veterans America Pageant, bringing attention to the strength and resilience of female veterans.

Through her work with Hendry County Veterans Affairs, Myra serves as a beacon of support for U.S. veterans, active-duty service members, and their families, ensuring they receive the benefits, outreach, and care they need. Her impact extends far beyond advocacy—she is a source of comfort, guidance, and unwavering support for those who have served.

Yet, amid all her roles as a leader, advocate, and mentor, Myra’s most treasured role is that of a mother. She has raised her children with the same strength and compassion that define her character. Among them are Novie Jo and Corbin, who have faced the challenges of Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), a rare genetic condition that makes their skin as delicate as butterfly wings. Myra’s daughter, Novie, has become an advocate for others with EB, following in her mother’s footsteps as a champion for those in need.

As the 2025 Grand Marshal, Myra Johnson embodies the values of resilience, service, and community. When she leads this year’s Swamp Cabbage Festival Parade, she will not only be celebrated for her remarkable achievements but also for the lasting impact she has made on LaBelle and beyond.

Join us in honoring Myra Johnson—an extraordinary leader, a dedicated veteran, and a true hometown hero.

The Swamp Cabbage Festival is proud to announce that the 2025 Heritage Family Honoree is Mrs. Bessie Lee Gregory and her family. This special recognition is awarded each year to a family that has lived in the LaBelle community for at least 25 years and has significantly contributed to the success and well-being of our hometown. This year, Mrs. Gregory, a lifelong resident and dedicated community servant, has been nominated for this honor by Myra Johnson.

A Lifetime of Dedication to LaBelle

Born on June 29, 1954, in Fort Myers, Florida, Bessie Gregory has been a pillar of the LaBelle community for 70 years, calling the Ford and Sunset community her home. Her roots in Hendry County run deep—her father, known as the beloved “Ice Man,” delivered ice to local residents, while her mother worked tirelessly as a homemaker and farmworker.

Bessie’s journey of service began with a passion for education. A 1973 graduate of LaBelle High School, she pursued higher education at Edison Community College, earning her Associate of Arts degree in 1978. She later obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Childhood Education from Nova University in 1983. This foundation led her to an impactful 30-year career in education, including 17 years with the Hendry County School Board, where she nurtured and mentored generations of students. Throughout her career, she worked at multiple daycare centers, Country Oaks Elementary, Upthegrove Elementary, and LaBelle High School, even serving on the School Advisory Council (SAC) at Upthegrove Elementary. Her dedication to the education of LaBelle’s youth culminated in her well-earned retirement in May 2021.

           A Heart for Community Service

Beyond her career in education, Mrs. Gregory is widely recognized as a “community mouthpiece”—a trusted and reliable voice who ensures that information and resources reach those in need. Her dedication to faith and service is evident through her lifelong membership at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, where she remains a steadfast servant.

LaBelle’s Roots: A Legacy of Agriculture and Community

As we gear up for the next Swamp Cabbage Festival, we also have the unique privilege of celebrating a historic moment: the City of LaBelle’s 100-year anniversary! Founded in 1925, LaBelle has grown from a small agricultural town nestled along the Caloosahatchee River into a vibrant, close-knit community that embraces its rich cultural heritage. This centennial year offers us a moment to reflect on LaBelle’s journey, its significance in Florida’s history, and the way it continues to thrive today.

The story of LaBelle began with its roots in cattle ranching and agriculture, two industries that shaped not only the local economy but also the town's identity. Settlers were drawn to this part of Florida for its fertile land, and the Sabal Palm tree—now our state tree—stood tall as a symbol of the land’s resilience and abundance. Over the past century, LaBelle has maintained its agricultural legacy, with it's ranches, farms and orange groves, while growing into a thriving city filled with tradition and community pride.

LaBelle’s centennial is not just about looking back at the past—it’s about celebrating how this community has evolved while preserving the values that make it so special. From our schools and local businesses to the hardworking families that have lived here for generations, LaBelle is defined by its people and their commitment to fostering a place where everyone can flourish.

While we reflect on the achievements of the last 100 years, LaBelle’s future looks just as promising. Our city’s dedication to preserving its natural beauty, fostering community engagement, and embracing its role as a regional hub is stronger than ever. We remain committed to protecting our natural resources—such as the Sabal Palm and the Caloosahatchee River—that have sustained this community for generations.

As LaBelle embarks on its next 100 years, we invite everyone to celebrate this centennial with us. Whether you're a long-time resident or a visitor attending the Swamp Cabbage Festival for the first time, you are part of the story we continue to write—a story of tradition, resilience, and progress.

           Join Us in the Celebration

We are incredibly proud to be part of LaBelle’s legacy, and the Swamp Cabbage Festival is excited to play a role in marking this milestone. Join us as we celebrate not only a festival but a community that has withstood the test of time and remains as vibrant as ever.

Hot glue gun and glue sticks

            Clear sealant (optional)

Cleaning supplies (brush, mild soap, water)

           Step 1:

Collecting the Sabal Palm Frond Boot

The boot jack is the section of the palm frond that wraps around the trunk of the sabal palm.

           To find the right piece:

           Locate a Sabal Palm Tree:

If you live in an area where sabal palms are common (such as Florida), you can often find fallen boots at the base of the tree. Avoid damaging living trees.

            Select the Right Boot:

Choose a boot jack that is wide and sturdy, preferably with natural points resembling antlers. The boot jack should be dry and not decaying.

           Check for Insects:

Before bringing the boot indoors, inspect it for any insects or nests.

           Step 2:

            Cleaning the Palm Frond Boot

Palm frond boots often need cleaning before crafting:

            Brush Off Debris:

Use a stiff brush to remove any dirt, loose bark, or debris from the boot.

           Wash Gently:

If necessary, wash the boot jack with mild soap and water. Be gentle to avoid breaking the natural fibers.

           Dry Completely:

Allow the boot jack to dry in the sun for several hours to ensure all moisture is gone before beginning your project.

           Step 3:

            Optional Insect Treatment

           Bug Spray:

If you’re concerned about insects, spray the boot jack with an insecticide and let it sit outside for a few days.

           Sealant:

You can also spray the cleaned and dried boot jack with a clear sealant to preserve the natural material and further protect it from insects.

           Step 4:

            Gather Craft Supplies

While the boot jack is drying, gather the following:

           Googly eyes for the eyes

A red pom-pom for the nose

Hot glue gun and glue sticks for attaching the decorations

Craft scissors if you need to trim the boot slightly (optional)

Clear sealant if you plan on sealing the finished piece (optional)

           Step 5:

            Assemble Your Reindeer

Once your boot is clean and dry, it’s time to create your reindeer:

           Position the Boot:

Hold the palm frond boot with the narrow end pointing down. The wide end will resemble antlers.

           Attach the Eyes:

Using a hot glue gun, place a small dot of glue where you want to attach the googly eyes. Press the eyes firmly into place and allow the glue to dry.

            Glue on the Nose:

Attach a red pom-pom to the narrow end of the boot using the hot glue gun. This will be Rudolph’s nose.

           Optional:

Add a Mouth or Other Features: If you like, you can use markers, paint, or craft paper to add additional features like a smile, ears, or even holiday decorations like tiny bells or a ribbon.

(Spanish Moss could be used for a touch of hair)

           Step 6:

            Seal Your Reindeer (Optional)

If you plan to use the reindeer decoration outdoors or want it to last longer, spray the entire piece with a clear sealant. This will protect it from moisture and wear.

           Step 7:

Once your Rudolph reindeer is assembled and the glue has dried, you’re ready to display your creation! Hang it on a door, wall, or mantle for a festive holiday touch.

           Crafting Tips:

If you don’t have access to a sabal palm, you can try recreating this project with other types of Palm limbs and other natural materials of bark or driftwood.

Consider experimenting with different sizes of boot jacks for a variety of reindeer looks, from tiny ornaments to large wall decorations.

This craft is a creative and fun way to celebrate the holiday season while making use of natural materials. Enjoy!

As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, the Swamp Cabbage Festival team would like to extend our warmest wishes to you and your family. Thanksgiving is a time for reflection, gratitude, and celebration—a season when we come together as a community to honor traditions, cherish family, and recognize the blessings in our lives.

The Origins of Thanksgiving: A Tradition of Gratitude

Thanksgiving is rooted in a history of gratitude and togetherness. The holiday dates back to 1621, when the Pilgrims and Wampanoag people shared a feast to celebrate a successful harvest and express mutual gratitude. Over the centuries, this tradition has grown into a national holiday, uniting families and communities across the country. Today, Thanksgiving remains a time to pause and reflect on all we have to be thankful for, while celebrating the importance of connection and community.

Here in LaBelle, Thanksgiving serves as a reminder of the deep heritage we share as a town and as a festival. Just as the Pilgrims and Wampanoag came together in a spirit of collaboration and generosity, we strive to celebrate these same values in the Swamp Cabbage Festival—honoring our history, traditions, and the people who make our community so special.

           Honoring Heritage and Traditions

In Southwest Florida, Thanksgiving traditions are as unique as the people who call this area home. Some of us gather with loved ones for a traditional turkey feast, while others prepare dishes inspired by the diverse cultures that make up our community. Many families include a slice of Florida in their celebrations, with fresh local produce, seafood, or a treasured swamp cabbage recipe passed down through generations.

The spirit of heritage is also woven into the Swamp Cabbage Festival, where we celebrate LaBelle’s unique history and culture each February. From the Sabal Palm, our state tree and an important historical food source, to the local traditions that make LaBelle feel like home, we’re reminded of the value of honoring the past while embracing the present.

           Thanksgiving: A Time for Togetherness

At its heart, Thanksgiving is about coming together. It’s a time to share meals, stories, and laughter with the people who matter most. Whether you’re gathered around a long dining table with extended family or hosting a cozy dinner with friends, the act of sharing and connecting is what makes this holiday so meaningful.

As a festival that celebrates community, we see the same spirit of Thanksgiving in the Swamp Cabbage Festival. Every February, our town comes alive with the sounds of music, the sight of joyful families, and the sense of pride that comes from being part of something bigger than ourselves. Thanksgiving reminds us of the importance of these moments—when we set aside time to appreciate the people and traditions that shape our lives.

           From Our Family to Yours

This Thanksgiving, we hope you’ll join us in celebrating the values of gratitude, heritage, and community. Take time to reflect on the traditions that bring meaning to your life and the people who make it special. Share a meal, make a memory, and remember that the heart of any celebration lies in the joy of coming together.

From all of us at the Swamp Cabbage Festival, we wish you a Happy Thanksgiving filled with love, laughter, and togetherness. We can’t wait to celebrate with you in February as we continue to honor LaBelle’s heritage and the traditions that make our community extraordinary.

           A Veteran’s Day Tribute

Happy Veteran’s Day, we at the Swamp Cabbage Festival take this moment to reflect on the courage and sacrifices of the men and women who have served our country. Each year at our festival, we proudly honor a veteran during our opening ceremonies with a special flag-folding ceremony, paying tribute to their service and dedication. It’s our way of celebrating those who have contributed so much to protect the freedoms and values we cherish.

In past years, we’ve had the privilege of honoring esteemed local veterans such as Shawn Reed, Myra Johnson, and Dave Reinbott. Their commitment to our nation has left a lasting impact not only on those who served alongside them but also on our community here in LaBelle. Through their stories, we are reminded of the bravery and resilience that defines our veterans and the sacrifices they have made.

This tradition is more than a ceremony; it’s a reminder of the selflessness of our military members and the importance of remembering their contributions. We look forward to continuing this tribute at the upcoming festival, where our community can come together in gratitude and respect.

We encourage everyone to find ways to stay engaged with the veteran community, whether through volunteer work, donations, or simply sharing their stories. By educating future generations about the importance of honoring our service members, we ensure that their sacrifices and legacy live on.

           Tips for a Spooktacular Celebration!

As we approach Halloween, excitement fills the air with the promise of spooky decorations, creative costumes, and, of course, the beloved tradition of trick-or-treating. Here at the Swamp Cabbage Festival, we care deeply about the safety and well-being of our LaBelle community. To ensure that everyone has a fun and safe Halloween, we’ve compiled some essential tips for a spooktacular celebration!

           1. Choose Costumes Wisely

Costumes are a highlight of Halloween, but safety should always come first! When selecting or creating costumes for your little ones, consider the following:

Visibility: Opt for costumes that are bright and reflective, or add reflective tape to dark costumes to help keep kids visible to drivers.

Comfort: Make sure costumes fit well and don’t impede movement. Long capes or over-sized accessories can pose tripping hazards.

Masks and Accessories: If using masks, ensure they have large eye holes for visibility. Consider face paint as a safer alternative, and avoid sharp or pointed accessories.

           2. Trick-or-Treating Safety Tips

Trick-or-treating is a cherished Halloween tradition, and keeping it safe is essential. Here are some tips to ensure a safe experience:

Plan a Route: Discuss your trick-or-treating route ahead of time. Stick to familiar neighborhoods and well-lit streets.

Buddy System: Encourage kids to go out with friends or family members. It’s always safer to trick-or-treat in groups.

Check Candy: Once home, check all candy before letting kids indulge. Discard any unwrapped or suspicious-looking treats.

           3. Be Aware of Your Surroundings

On Halloween night, the streets can be bustling with excitement, so staying alert is key:

Watch for Traffic: Teach children to look both ways before crossing the street and to use crosswalks when possible. Remind them to be extra cautious around cars and to avoid darting into the road.

Stay Off Your Phone: Distracted walking can lead to accidents. Encourage kids to stay focused on their surroundings while enjoying the festivities.

           4. Home Safety for Trick-or-Treaters

If you’re handing out candy this Halloween, there are steps you can take to make your home safe and inviting:

Clear Pathways: Make sure your porch and walkways are well-lit and free of obstacles that could cause tripping.

Secure Pets: Keep pets in a safe place to prevent them from getting startled by excited trick-or-treaters. This will also keep your furry friends calm and stress-free.

           5. Local Halloween Events

LaBelle offers a range of Halloween activities that are fun for the whole family! Check out local events, like pumpkin patch at the First Baptist Church or community Trunk or Treat at the Rodeo grounds hosted by the Christ Central Church, where you can enjoy safe and festive activities.

           In Conclusion

As you gear up for Halloween, remember that safety is just as important as fun. By following these tips, you can help ensure a memorable and enjoyable Halloween for your family and friends.

From all of us at the Swamp Cabbage Festival, we wish you a safe and happy Halloween! We can’t wait to see everyone at the festival in February, where we’ll continue to celebrate our amazing community and its traditions!

A Tree That Withstands the Storm: The Sabal Palm’s Strength in Hurricane Season

           A True Survivor

When hurricanes threaten Florida’s coastline, many trees may bend, break, or uproot under the intense winds and heavy rains. But there’s one tree that stands strong, season after season—the Sabal Palm, Florida's state tree. Known for its incredible resilience, the Sabal Palm is a natural symbol of strength, especially in hurricane-prone regions like ours.

What makes the Sabal Palm so hurricane-hardy? For starters, its flexible trunk and dense, fibrous structure allow it to sway with the wind instead of snapping. Unlike many trees, which have shallow or rigid roots, the Sabal Palm’s deep root system anchors it firmly in the ground, helping it stay upright even in strong storm surges.

Another key factor is the palm’s fronds. Instead of acting like sails that catch the wind, they fold and bend, reducing resistance. This natural design minimizes the chance of being uprooted or damaged.

The Sabal Palm’s ability to survive hurricanes is more than just a natural marvel—it’s a reminder of the strength of Florida’s landscape and why preserving our native plants is so important. As the heart of our Swamp Cabbage Festival, we celebrate the Sabal Palm not only for its cultural significance but also for its ability to thrive where others falter.

Please, take a moment to appreciate these resilient palms all around us. They are more than just trees—they’re survivors, just like the people of LaBelle.

As the sun sets on the 3rd of July, anticipation blankets America in a quiet hum, readying for Independence Day’s heartfelt celebrations. On the 4th of July, Americans commemorate the 1776 adoption of the Declaration of Independence, marking the nation’s birth on the ideals of freedom, democracy, and unity. This day, steeped in tradition, unites families, friends, and communities in joyous remembrance of the bravery and sacrifices of the Founding Fathers and countless others who preserved these freedoms. Vibrant firework displays light up the night sky, echoing the cheers of onlookers and symbolizing the resilient American spirit. Backyard barbecues and picnics, laden with classic fare like burgers and apple pie, foster connections and create lasting memories. Parades, with their marching bands and floats, showcase the nation’s diverse talent, fostering community pride. Tributes to veterans and military personnel honor those who protect liberty, reminding us of the cost of freedom. Amid the festivities, there's a moment for reflection on the nation's founding principles and the ongoing pursuit of equality and justice. As America gathers to celebrate, this day stands as a testament to the enduring strength and resilience of its spirit, waving the stars and stripes in honor of a great nation.

Each year the festival choses to a theme that helps promote our celebration. Themes can be historical or fun, and they help keep the celebration fresh while offering a way in which festival goers can participate in a more immersive experience. This year's theme is, "Wild about Hendry County."

On May 11, 1923, the Florida Legislature voted to establish Hendry County, in honor of Captain Francis Hendry. At its roots, the development of Hendry County stemmed from pioneering the wilderness. It was the work of early settlers such as trading post owner Pierre Denaud, and it's namesake cattle rancher Francis A. Hendry who laid the foundation of what would be our home. Some other notable influences that brought success to the area were industrialists: Thomas Edison, Hendry Ford and Harvey Firestone, making many trips to Hendry county by way of the Caloosahatchee River.

You will see this theme pervasive throughout the local competitions and celebrations of the festival such as the Swamp Cabbage Queen Pageant, Swamp Stomp 5k, or the Grand Parade.

How many native species can you name that reside in Hendry County?

Our beloved Swamp Cabbage Festival gets its name from the official state tree of Florida: Sabal

has a taste very similar to cabbage. The heart is actually a fruit that is white in color and hidden
